Case Study: Custom Bay Window Leather Lounge for a Country Style Home
Some rooms are beautiful but impossible to furnish. Large bay windows, angled walls and wide views are great for architecture, but standard lounges never quite fit. That was exactly the challenge in this country style home, where the owners wanted a comfortable, social space without blocking their outlook.
They came to Leisure Lounges looking for a custom solution that would follow the angles of the room, maximise seating and showcase a high quality Italian aniline leather. The result is the wrap-around leather lounge you see here – built to measure, made in our Sydney factory and designed to be part of the home for decades.
The Brief: Warm, Welcoming and Built to Fit
This room has floor-to-ceiling windows on multiple angles, looking out over trees and open space. The owners wanted:
- A lounge that followed the bay and angled walls with no awkward gaps or wasted space.
- Comfortable seating for family and guests – a true entertaining zone rather than just a couple of chairs.
- A warm, timeless look using high quality Italian aniline leather that would age gracefully.
- A design that looked built-in, not like a bunch of modular pieces pushed together.
Because everything we make is custom, we were able to design the lounge around the room, rather than trying to force a standard sofa into a space it was never meant for.
Step 1: On-Site Measure and Templates
With angled walls, “close enough” simply doesn’t work. For this project we carried out a full on-site measure and created templates for every angle around the bay.
- We measured each wall section, angle and return precisely.
- We produced full-size templates to capture the exact shape of the bay.
- Those templates went back to our Smeaton Grange factory and formed the basis for every piece we built.
This process is how we achieve that seamless, wrap-around effect. The lounge follows the room perfectly – no gaps, no overhangs, no scraping along the walls.
Step 2: Designing the Lounge for the Space
Once we understood the shape of the room, we designed the lounge in segments that follow every angle, finishing in a generous chaise at one end. Key design choices included:
- Clean, squared arms to keep the look modern and uncluttered.
- Consistent seat and back heights all the way around the bay to give a built-in feel.
- A chaise end on one side for stretching out with a book or lying back to enjoy the view.
- Segmented base and seat sections that line up with each angle, so each person still has a defined seat and comfort isn’t compromised.
The result is a lounge that hugs the room and invites you to sit anywhere – perfect for big family gatherings, movie nights or simply curling up with a coffee.
Step 3: Choosing the Italian Aniline Leather
For this project, the clients chose a warm caramel Italian aniline leather. Aniline leather is loved for its natural character – you see the grain and subtle variations, rather than a painted-on finish.
This leather was the ideal choice because it:
- Adds warmth to the room and works beautifully with the grey carpet and white walls.
- Will develop a rich patina over time, becoming even more inviting as it ages.
- Offers a soft, comfortable hand feel that suits long, relaxed seating.
We upholstered each custom-made segment in this leather, matching seams and panels so the whole lounge reads as one continuous piece.
Step 4: Comfort – Foams and Support
As with all custom lounges from Leisure Lounges, the comfort level was tailored to the clients. For this build we used:
- Dunlop Enduro support foam in the seats for long-term support and durability.
- Comfortable back cushions with a softer feel for relaxed, everyday use.
- Seat depths and heights set specifically for the way the family likes to sit and socialise.
The aim was to create a lounge they can happily sit on for hours – whether that’s entertaining, watching a game, or simply enjoying the country views.
Maximising Space and Creating a True Entertaining Zone
Before the new lounge was installed, this room was visually impressive but functionally underused. The angles made it hard to furnish and the owners never quite knew what to put there.
The custom bay window lounge completely changed that:
- Every wall is now usable seating, not dead space.
- The room functions as a genuine entertaining area – perfect for guests, kids and extended family.
- The low, continuous back keeps the view through the windows open and uninterrupted.
It now feels like the heart of the home rather than an awkward, hard-to-use room.
Built In, Built to Last – and Reupholsterable
One of the biggest advantages of this kind of custom bay window build is that it feels like part of the house, not just another piece of furniture pushed into a corner.
Underneath the leather, this lounge is built on solid frames with quality supports, made in our Sydney factory. With normal care, the structure should comfortably last 10–20 years.
Down the track, if the owners decide they want a new look, we can reupholster the existing lounge in a different leather or fabric, update the foam, and keep the perfectly fitted shape that works so well in the room.
